My Risk Management Project Eastside Centre - 2054 Words
The KIN organization that I am doing my risk management project on is Eastside Centre in East Peoria, Illinois. This facility has been in use for quite some time, but they usually keep everything up to date and maintained. The three main sections that I am examining are the weight room, basketball court, and the indoor track. I am not examining the outdoor track or the baseball complex that is outside. Eastside is a top-notch fitness and athletic facility. It not only allows people to be fit, but also hosts tournaments on the national, regional and local levels in softball, baseball, volleyball, soccer and also track. It also hosts high school events for East Peoria Community High School and also Central Junior High School baseball,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In the fitness industry, there is a potential for risk due to people lifting weight and exercising. One of the biggest trends I have seen is facilities educating their staff (Applebaum, 2011). It is very important to train em ployees to identify risks throughout the facility. Employees must check every room or entrance for possible risks to clients and take care of the risk by either solving it themselves or contacting their boss. Locker rooms should have clean towels, showers, and bathrooms. The most common injuries that occur at gyms are caused by slipping or falling (Applebaum, 2011). The fitness center should also educate the members and provide them with information on how to properly follow good gym safety. Teaching members to keep their personal belongs in lockers not only reduces the risk of items being stolen, but also reduces the possibility of someone tripping over the object while walking in the locker room. Providing members with signs how proper form and technique will show them how to properly perform the exercises. A trend that has been growing is posting signs on warming up and cool down before and after exercise to reduce the risk of being injured while exercising. A big trend nowadays is becoming a gym trainer, but be careful and make sure to check to see if the trainers you are hiring have the correct

Nutrition and Fitness Paper Free Essays
First step to a healthier new me would be to change my current fitness habit, which is not much other than teaching dance and walking to adding more activity to my week without losing sleep. After looking at what my current fitness routine is teaching two and half hours of dance a week and walking a week for two and half hours I noticed I needed to add more activity to my week. Within that first step is to set a goal of how much time is needed to be achieved a week and how much time is available to achieve that goal. Second step is to improve the area of nutrition, I eat the three meals a day and I even snack a bit for the extra energy kick needed for the day. But nutritional habits are a lot like fitness habits, it focuses on eating right and exercising right. Habits are created to improve or even decrease who we are. So creating a healthy habit is essential to achieve the goal set in front of us. Poor nutrition can lead to obesity which can lead to medical problems in years to come. A normal familyââ¬â¢s lifestyle can result to unhealthy eating habits with stops at fast food chains. Families need that cooking time together to eat In a healthier way and create positive habits among the parents and the children. I know my eating habits still to this day are affected by my eating habits as a child. My mother worked day and night and my dad also worked long days and sometime nights. So dinner was to a none cooked meal, sometimes It was McDonaldââ¬â¢s or pizza. So now Tanat I work more than the average forty hour work week, I sometimes slip and eat that fast food because it is there and easy. Knowing that I know I need to make the changes to change my bad habits. Fitting healthy habits into a hectic life is not easy but following a few steps to get more nutrition and fitness in a hectic life is necessary for any person who wants to make their fifth birthday. Here are a few things that can be put into play right now that can make healthy habits an easy part of the day to day routine. Areas that I have started to make improvements in my own health is in red and highlighted to show how little steps can make big steps later in life. Guarani Ph. D (n. D. ) 1. Drink water throughout the day (doing my best currently) 2. Cut back on the amount of soda and coffee drank in the day (already made some cut backs) 3. Replace high sugar foods with low sugar versions 4. Stock up on healthy, portable snacks (eating better snacks during my day) 5. Take the time to plan healthy meals for the week 6. Purchase frozen, ready to cook ingredients 7. Pack your lunch the night before 8. Cook double batches of what your cooking 9. Give yourself some slack 10. Fit in exercise as much as you can (trying to add more fitness in during a busy work week) 11. Take a walk break during the day (getting up at work and Just walking around the office to stretch) 12. Whenever possible, walk (parking further in parking lots when I can to increase walking) 13. Get enough sleep (trying for more than six hours, tough but trying) Now going through this list I see many areas I can do to improve my health and I also see those ways can help improve my fitness levels and my stress level at the same time too. By adding some or all of these new healthy habits into my lifestyle today, it can improve the way I feel in no time at all. Making small steps for me can help promote a new look on my weight management and by doing that it will give me more energy during the day to increase my fitness plan for adding more fitness to my week. Those new habits would help diminish the old habits that have been taught or created over the years by my parentââ¬â¢s poor habits. My mother and her mother were not small people and I donââ¬â¢t want that type of life. They were not obese people but they were not healthy either, obesity is not Just being overweight. Obesity can lead to medical problems beyond weight. Obesity can lead to heart conditions, leg problems, back problems, and even mental problems. This is onto life I want and I want to make the changes now before it changes me. While reading the New York Times today, I came across this article that the government tells people how to eat better is to eat less. ââ¬Å"The latest nutrition guidelines released Monday by the federal government reiterates of the advice from previous years: eat less salt and saturated fats, eat more fruits and vegetables and hole grainsâ⬠(Martin, 2011, Para. ). With this information they tell us by eating the Dad we wall never lose ten welling Just Keep It on, unless you cut Deck Ana eat some more of the better. At the end of the article the writer states it simple ââ¬Å"Cut back on the cheese, hamburgers, pizza, cookies and pastriesâ⬠(Martin, 2011, Para. 23). So Just cutting back can change your life. Conclusion Like kids, adults need to make t he right food choices to be healthy and must exercise to be healthy. Even in a busy lifestyle they need to make the correct choices f they, plan to live pas the age of fifty years old. My family created poor habits for myself and my brother and both of us noticed the problem and knew it had to change now rather than later. More adults are battling obesity today more than ever and that is because of the busy lifestyle we all lead. By making the changes now as young adults or adults in their mid thirties they can learn how to eat properly and exercise, better to make it to fifty years old healthier than they could of before the changes. The Zipper Essay Example For Students
The Zipper Essay The zipper is a very common fastener used to secure all kinds of things, especially clothing. But the zipper wasnt always around. Before the zipper was invented, buttons were used in fastening clothes, and so were hooks and eyes that had to be fastened manually. When the zipper first came out, it was somewhat of an oddity; it wasnt widely accepted. But slowly, more and more people started noticing its convenient applications, and soon it could be seen everywhere. The zipper started off as a novelty, and because of its convenience, it is now a necessity.The first zipper was invented by Whitcomb Judson. He devised it to do up boots, and got the device patented on August 29, 1893. He called it the clasp locker. The clasp locker was much bulkier than the zipper we know today. It was a series of two rows of hooks and eyes that could be fastened by a slider (which was the most important part of Judsons invention). Another big difference from todays zipper is that after zipping up the faste ner, the slider would detach right off the garment. Then to open the clasp locker, the slider would be re-attached at the top of the locked clasps, upside down, and then pulled down.About a year after the patents were issued, a close friend of Whitcomb Judson, named Harry Earle, and a lawyer named Lewis Walker met up with Judson, and they formed the Universal Fastening Company. They werent very successful. One of the main reasons was that the clasp locker didnt work very well. The fastener frequently jammed, and easily rusted. But in April of 1896, some Post Office Department representatives went to the company and inspected the Judson fastener on a mailbag and pronounced it satisfactory. Twenty mailbags equipped with the fasteners were ordered. That was one of the first orders Universal Fastening Company got, and it wasnt repeated. Its assumed that the mailbags were discarded due to faulty fasteners.While Judson tried to improve his fastener, the company struggled to get customers. But soon they werent so worried about trying to sell it, and more worried about finding useful applications for it. In early promotion, it was described as a 20th century device. Also remarkable in its simplicity, rapidity, security, utility. The fastener would be shown applied to skirt plackets, gloves, corsets, boots, shoes, and leggings. A little later in the decade, Judson came up with a new separable fastener, called the C-curity fastener, although its patent wasnt issued until 1905. After the patent was issued, the company brought it to market. Finally, after ten years, there was a fastener that could be manufactured and sold. With the introduction of the C-curity, the fastener makers deepened their commitment to a market that they hardly imagined when they began: womens skirts and dresses. They were sure of their target at this time, and confident that they were on the right path. One advertisement, using three famous singers, past and present (at the time) went as follows:I n 1782 Mrs. Siddons was laced into her costume at the Drury Lane Theater.In 1850 Jennie Lind depended on hooks and eyes at Castle Garden.In 1901 Lillian Russell used Snaps at the Weber and Fields Music Hall.And then:A Pull and its Done! No More Open Skirts. No old fashioned Hooks and Eyes or Fasteners. Your Skirt is Always Securely and Neatly Fastened. The C-curity Placket Fastener.Now, advertising by the company wasnt only to get people to buy it, but also to get workers to sell the fastener door-to-door. The door-to-door sales strategy can be explained by noting that this was a product that required a personal approach to customers rather than by selling through stores where clerks are oftentimes indifferent even to the point of discourtesy when the sale of an article needs personal instruction of its application and use.In fact, with each fastener sold, an instruction booklet was included. This goes to show how strange and new it was for everyone:To open, unhook and pull on waist band with both hands, as you would tear in two a piece of paper or cloth.To close, take hold of the ring and pull up slide, holding garment below opening with other hand. Pull steady, dont jerk.Important!!! If, in moving the slide, it tightens, push it back just a little; this will ease it. Dont pull hard if it stops; push it back.Smooth out the folds of underskirt, so they will not get caught in the slide. If skirt is to be washed remove fastener.Its plain to see that Judsons C-curity fastener was operated differently from the zippers we use today, and had many more complications. Tearing the two sides apart was all you had to do to open it. This tells us that it probably opened a little too easily; and when you didnt want it to. This plus the relatively high price of the fastener would obviously make it very undesirable, but that didnt stop the company (which was by now named Automatic Hook and Eye) from continuing their efforts. Campaigning even went to Europe to try to get cust omers.Soon a new worker came to the company, a Swedish immigrant named Gideon Sundback. He was an engineer, recruited by one of Automatic Hook and Eyes bosses, who was also native to Sweden. Hard at work, in 1906, Sundback came up with the Plako fastener, which wasnt a lot different from the C-Curity. It was improved, but before long, it was realized that it had the same problems.It was right about this time that Whitcomb Judson and Harry Earle, two of the founders of the company decided it was time to leave. The fastener was in only Sundbacks hands. Sundback was fed up with hooks and eyes that were so constantly part of the fastener, and in 1913 he designed a fastener which had jaw members that clamped around the corded edge of the tape on the opposite side. It was called a hookless fastener, just as, at that time, cars were called horseless carriages and radios were frequently called wireless.His first hookless failed like all the others, and then he came up with the #2 hookless. This one was coated with a better rust retardant, and was also more flexible. He also made it with scoops, or teeth for fasteners, and this was to become the modern zipper. They didnt know what to call this one. First they tried hookless hooker which was quickly replaced with hookless #2. But since most of the world never knew hookless #1, simply hookless would do. The company changed its name again, now it was Hookless Fastener Company.By the end of 1914, endorsements from department stores started coming in saying that they would ask the manufacturers to put the hookless on some garments. But some manufacturers didnt need to be asked, they themselves wanted to put it on. On the other hand, there were some who associated the new model with the previous Plako and C-curity models, and didnt want to go near it.One market that wasnt afraid of it was sports clothing. In 1916, a riding skirt was made, with one fastener in the front, and one in the back, which could be worn as a regular s kirt with the fasteners closed, and then when the rider got on the horse, she would undo the zippers and be able to ride. The fasteners were also used on trousers for sports like baseball and football.During WWI, the hookless was tried out on other things like a mothproof wardrobe, a slipcover and sleeping bags. Soon a development of aviators clothing for the war which used the fastener was started, for which large government contracts could be anticipated.Finally, in 1917, the novelty of the fastener really started to show through when a man named Robert J. Ewig visited the Hookless Fastener company with his idea. His idea was for a moneybelt-the fastener would be applied to a pocket suspended on the inside of a trouser belt. It was to be aimed at soldiers, especially sailors, whose uniforms had no pockets. There were no objections, and by early 1918, Ewig began to produce the moneybelts. They were a hit. The belts sold out as fast as they were stocked, in a wide range of outlets a nd drugstores. Ewigs orders in 1918 totaled more than $7,700 and he sold an estimated 24,000 belts before his business slowed down in the months after the war ended.Also in 1918, many other small companies began providing a steady customer base. The NuBone Corset company kept up some orders, and so did a couple of raincoat companies. Applications were also found on one-piece overalls, athletic trousers and even swimming trunks. Also their first luggage applications were seen with the use on tennis racket covers and bathing suit bags.With new applications, new demands were put on the fastener, which required Sundback and his shop to modify designs accordingly. For example, it was tried out on gloves which called for much smaller and lighter models. In about 1919, the fastener was experimented on tobacco pouches. It turned out to be a good source of consumption for Hookless Fastener Company. By the mid-1920s, the pouches made up 70 percent of the companys output. But the biggest break of all came in 1923 when B.F. Goodrich Company decided to put them on a new product, rubber galoshes. They hoped to capture more customers attention by equipping their product with this novel device. The first order they put in was for 150,000 fasteners. The story goes that Mr. B.F. Goodrich himself gave the name zipper to the device, because he liked the z-z-z-i-p sound that it made. The rubber galoshes came out and were sold as Zipper Boots, and its obvious that the onomatopoeic name stuck with it from then on.The fashion world was still a little reluctant to accept the zipper. Then in 1935, with the help of a new plastic zipper, designer Elsa Schiaparelli came out with a line of clothing that was dripping with zippers. Schiaparelli was the first fashion designer to produce colored zippers, oversized zippers, and zippers that were decorative and nonfunctional. Also in the 1930s, a new sales campaign began aimed at childrens clothing. It introduced the self help idea, which was th e idea that small children would have an easier time dressing themselves with zipper-equipped clothing (than with buttons), and this would help them develop confidence and self-reliance.While the zipper was being tried out on small childrens wardrobes and the high fashion industry was experimenting with it, it started seeping more heavily into the regular garment clothing markets. By the late 1930s, garment makers in New York and elsewhere regarded the fastener as an ordinary and generally accepted feature of adult clothing. And by looking at the yearly sales of zippers, its clear. In 1937, the company sold 139.5 million. In 1938, 202 million, in 1939, 300 million were sold. And by 1941, zipper production in America topped half a billion.Today the zipper is used to close all kinds of things, from clothing, to luggage, to tents and sleeping bags. It has even come to symbolize many things-sexuality, mechanism, cleverness, opening and closing, attaching and releasing, revealing and hid ing. For example, when I was in elementary school, to assure a friend that we would keep a secret, we would go through the motion of closing a zipper that was attached to our mouths.Perhaps in todays world, where rushing is a part of everyday life, we need a device like the zipper so we can get dressed faster than if we had clothes with only buttons or snaps, and so we can close up our backpacks or other luggage and get going. Macbeth was already Thane of Glamis but he was puzzled because the Thane of Cawdor was still alive. When Macbeth heard of the Thane of Cawdors treachery, and that he was to take his title he began to wonder if the witches had spoken the truth. The seed that the witches had planted was growing. Lady Macbeth was another main cause of the tragedy. Macbeth was having doubts about the appalling thing he was considering, and Lady Macbeth convinced him it was the right thing to do. She called him a coward and told him I have given suck, and know how tender tis to love the babe that milks me: I would, while it was still smiling in my face, have plucked my nipple from its boneless gums, and dashed the brains out, had I so sworn as you have done to this. So in effect she was saying I would go so far as to kill my own child if I had sworn to it like you have sworn to this. Macbeths own weakness was to contribute towards his downfall. It was said in the play brave Macbeth well he deserves that name disdaining fortune, with his brandishd steel, which smokd with bloodied execution, like valours minion carvd out his passage, till he faced the slave: which he neer shook hands or, nor bade farewell to him, till he was unseamd him from the nave to the chops, and fixed his head upon our battlements. This was a statement from one of the soldiers fighting beside Macbeth praising his bravery and valour in battle. However, when it came to strength of character Macbeth was lacking. He let his wife make his earlier decisions for him by manipulating him with her words. He did not have enough strength of mind to make his own decisions about the actions he was about to commit. Although theà witches were a very large contributing factor to the downfall of Macbeth, they werent the only one. Had Macbeth not wanted to be king or lady Macbeth not have pushed him towards it then the outcome could have been somewhat different.

Ever, from the Old English word aefre, is used in these types of constructions: In positively constructed questions: ââ¬Å"Have you ever been to Disneyland?â⬠In negatively constructed questions: ââ¬Å"Havenââ¬â¢t you ever been to Disneyland?â⬠In positively constructed statements referring to a first instance: ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s the first time anyone has ever asked me.â⬠In negatively constructed statements expressing that something has not occurred: ââ¬Å"Nobody has ever asked me that before.â⬠To describe a continuous state: ââ¬Å"I have ever wanted to go to Disneyland.â⬠To mean ââ¬Å"at any timeâ⬠: ââ¬Å"I want to go to Disneyland more than ever before.â⬠To mean ââ¬Å"in any wayâ⬠: ââ¬Å"How can I ever go to Disneyland?â⬠Note that the word is not essential in any of these questions or statements; it simply intensifies the verb it modifies. For example, ââ¬Å"I want to go to Disneyland more than beforeâ⬠simply states that the desire to go is greater than it used to be, while ââ¬Å"I want to go to Disneyland more than ever beforeâ⬠suggests a strength of feeling about the subject. Never, from the Old English word naefre, consisting of ne (ââ¬Å"notâ⬠) attached to aefre, is more limited in usage: In positively constructed questions prompting or confirming a negative response: ââ¬Å"Have you never been to Disneyland?â⬠(Using never with the negative form of a verb, such as havenââ¬â¢t, is redundant but appears occasionally in colloquial usage.) Nobody has asked me that before ever. Never have I been asked that before. Already, however, is more versatile (again, the choices differ in grammatical formality; the third and fifth examples are considered good English): Already, Iââ¬â¢ve been to Disneyland. Iââ¬â¢ve been already to Disneyland. Iââ¬â¢ve been to Disneyland already. Have you been already to Disneyland? Have you been to Disneyland already? Yet appears in sentences indicating that something hasnââ¬â¢t occurred up to the present: I havenââ¬â¢t been to Disneyland yet. It is usually placed at the end of the sentence but for emphasis occasionally appears near the beginning: I havenââ¬â¢t yet been to Disneyland. The implication is that the speaker expects or hopes that the action will occur at some point; without yet, a simple fact is stated with no additional implication. Also, ââ¬Å"Yet, I havenââ¬â¢t been to Disneylandâ⬠has a different meaning: As an alternative to however or nevertheless, it points out a contradiction or a rebuttal in response to a statement such as ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ve been all over the world.â⬠Yet can also have the sense of ââ¬Å"in additionâ⬠or be a synonym for one sense of even, as in ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re facing yet another problemâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Tomorrow, they have yet more ground to coverâ⬠respectively. What Is The Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search, and Why Do It SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips What is the Duke TIP, and what is the 7th Grade Talent Search? In this article, I'll be writing about the Duke Talent Identification Program, also known as Duke TIP, also known as the Duke TIP Program. The Duke TIP is a conglomeration of multiple subprograms, one of which is the 7th Grade Talent Search. While you can find all the information about it on Duke's own website, as I did, the information is spread out and a little tricky to track down (hence the confused panda at the top of this article). For your convenience, I've compiled everything here into one magnificent blog post/guide. I recommend reading it all the way through, but if you only want to read one particular section, you can pick and choose from the Table of Contents. A disclaimer: I've done a lot of linking in this article to the Duke TIP website, and while all links and information were correct (to the best of my knowledge) at the time of this article's publication, things may have changed since then. Since there is so much to say about the Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search, Iââ¬â¢ve broken it down into who, what, where, and when (the why and the how get their own separate sections). What Is the Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search? The 7th Grade Talent Search... Identifies gifted 7th grade students through test scores (there's more information about this in the How Do I Apply? section of this guide). Registers these students to take the SAT or ACT during their 7th grade school year. Provides students with information on how to interpret these test scores and resources to help them and their families better plan out their futures. These resources include advice and guidance regarding your education plan, special Duke TIP publications like The Talent Search Experience and eInsights, online resources like The Digest of Gifted Research, and access to Duke TIPââ¬â¢s year-round Independent Learning courses. More specifics can be found on the Duke TIP website. Uses the students' scores on the SAT or ACT to qualify students for various other Duke TIP components like summer programs or eStudies courses. Who's Eligible for the Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search? If you live in the US, are in seventh grade (or are an eighth grader who skipped seventh grade), and meet the test score requirements (more on that here), you can enroll in Dukeââ¬â¢s 7th Grade Talent Search. Simple as that. Homeschooled? Not to worry. The 7th Grade Talent Search is completely open to home-, public-, private-, parochial-, and other-schooled students. If you donââ¬â¢t fit under these guidelines, donââ¬â¢t sweat it- there are other Duke TIP subprograms that might be right for you, like 8th-10th Grade Option. Great! So Where Does the 7th Grade Talent Search Take Place? Unless you are reporting your SAT or ACT score separately and need to use paper application (more on that here), all parts of the application happen online, and all resources are distributed online. In fact, with the exception of taking the SAT or ACT, which will require you to go in person to a testing center, all you need for Duke TIP is a computer or mobile device and an internet connection. The only times when Duke TIP has in-person interactions are if you are invited to and choose to attend the Recognition Ceremonies at the end of the year. When Does This All Happen? The 7th Grade Talent Search takes place during the 7th grade school year. For most students (all US students), enrollment begins in August, with the rest of the Talent Search (SAT or ACT testing, information about your scores, resources for gifted students, and the recognition ceremonies for high-scoring students) spread out over the rest of the 7th grade school year. If youââ¬â¢re not in the US, you can either take part through the 8th-10th Grade Option or by submitting a request for the program you want to take part in and submitting a portfolio with transcripts, extracurricular resumes, test scores, IQ Scores, and any other materials requested. Return to Table of Contents Why Should You Apply For The Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search? So what do students get out of the Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search? One perk is the opportunity to take what Duke calls ââ¬Å"above-levelâ⬠tests (that is, you take the SAT or ACT before you're in high school) and compare your results with similarly gifted peers. Why is this helpful? It can give you information early on about areas you might want to to further develop and give you a preview of the test-taking process. For instance, let's say you score a 200 on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section, which is below par compared to your peers in the TIP. You'll know that you have to work on that skill, and as a result be able to better plan with your family for high school and the college admissions process. If you just took the SAT as a 7th grader without taking part in the Talent Search, you would not have the opportunity to know how you stack up against other students in your grade and age group; instead, you would end up being compared to much older students, which doesn't really tell you anything about where you should be now. Taking part in the 7th Grade Talent Search also opens up opportunities to enroll in and attend other Duke TIP subprograms, including (but not limited to) eStudies courses, Summer Studies programs, Scholar Weekends, and Field Studies. You'll get access to the advice and resources discussed above as well. Finally, there's the recognition of your prowess at the (aptly named) Recognition Ceremonies. At year-end ceremonies, Duke TIP recognizes the highest scorers on the SAT or ACT out of all the 7th Grade Talent Search participants. We have more information about these ceremonies in articles about the SAT and ACT score requirements to qualify, but for now, I'll just say that it is usually gratifying to get special recognition for your talent. It's not just about the medal (although you do get one at the Award Ceremonies)- it's knowing that other people value your hard work. IF...you donââ¬â¢t care about taking college entrance exams early, OR ...you donââ¬â¢t have any interest in taking part in TIP summer programs or resources later on down the line, ...THEN it might not be worth it for you to apply to the Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search. Why? Most colleges donââ¬â¢t care about what you did in middle school, unless it was something truly spectacular like getting a paper published or starring in a Broadway show. Bottom line: if youââ¬â¢re going to use the resources and take advantage of the programs open to you through TIP, then absolutely do it. If not, save your money (and time). How Do I Apply To The Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search? So after reading all this information, youââ¬â¢ve been inspired to apply to the 7th Grade Talent Search, and need instructions. Or maybe you already were inspired, but didnââ¬â¢t know how. Either way, I've done the research for you. Read on for instructions on how you can qualify for the Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search, and how to apply. In order to enroll in the Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search, you must meet a certain threshold on your scores on approved standardized tests. What are these tests, and what are the thresholds, you ask? There are two categories of tests that are accepted by Duke TIP, each with different standards you must meet to qualify for the 7th Grade Talent Search. Category 1: IQ Tests. To qualify for Duke TIP's 7th Grade Talent Search, you must have scored 125 or above on IQ test administered within the last two years. Some of the most commonly administered IQ tests accepted by Duke TIP include the Weschler Intelligence Scale for Children, the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, the Cognitive Assessment System, or any of the Woodcock Johnson Tests. Category 2: Other standardized tests. To qualify for Duke TIP's 7th Grade Talent Search, you must have scored ââ¬Å"at or above the 95th percentile on an accepted grade-level standardized test, aptitude test, mental-ability test, or state criterion-referenced testâ⬠[Quotation source: Eligibility | Duke TIP. Accessed 2018-12-08.] These are often state-administered tests, like the California Achievement Test, or any test that's part of the New York Statewide Testing Program. All of the specific tests that Duke TIP accepts as metrics for their 7th Grade Talent Search are listed on this site in a drop-down menu. If you canââ¬â¢t find a test youââ¬â¢ve taken in this list, you can always email Duke TIP (qualifying_test@tip.duke.edu) to see if a test that youââ¬â¢ve taken is accepted. After you've figured out if you qualify for the 7th Grade Talent Search, you're all set to create your Duke TIP account and enroll. The "enroll now" link is only active from early August-early December of each year, but you can still create your account now and check back again in August to enroll. Exceptions If you participated in the 4th-6th Grade Talent Search and took the optional EXPLORE test, then you are automatically qualified (although you still have to enroll). Otherwise, even if you took part in the 4th-6th Grade Talent Search, you must re-qualify and enroll in the 7th Grade Talent Search. If you have already taken SAT/ACT, already paid and registered to take it, or missed the Talent Search deadline but are planning on registering for the SAT/ACT, you can still enroll for the 7th Grade Talent Search, but you must do so using the 2Step enrollment process and a paper application. Return to Table of Contents Logistics: Cost Now you know what the 7th Grade Talent Search is, why you should do it, and how to apply. What follows are a few more details that might be useful about the cost of the 7th Grade Talent Search. Quick disclaimer: all costs are at the time of this articleââ¬â¢s writing, so be sure to check the 7th Grade Talent Search, SAT, and ACT websites before planning a budget around this information. The application fee for the 7th Grade Talent Search is $80. This fee includes the cost of registration for the SAT or the ACT, depending on which test you choose to take. Since the writing portion of the ACT is optional for talent search participants, however, if you want to take the SAT with the essay, you'll have to pay an additional $17; if you want to do the ACT with the essay (ACT Plus Writing), you'll have to pay an additional $16.50. Can I Get Financial Aid? Yes. If you qualify for free or reduced price lunches, and submit the proper documentation showing this, you can waive part of the application fee for the 7th Grade Talent Search. Qualified applicants who are able to present written verification (either the approval paperwork or fee grant form on school letterhead) of their free/reduced price lunch status will only have to pay an enrollment fee of $30, rather than $80. You can also get scholarships from foundations like Jack Cooke Foundation Young Scholars Program. Return to Table of Contents Tips to Get Into the Duke TIP I'm sure you're shocked that I couldn't resist making a "tips for TIP" joke. Regardless, I've made up a list of helpful hints to boost your chances of getting into Duke TIP's 7th Grade Talent Search and other programs. If you havenââ¬â¢t done particularly well on school standardized tests within the last two years, take a look into some of the other test options. Maybe an IQ test would be a better way to identify your talent and potential. If youââ¬â¢re waffling between the 7th Grade Talent Search and waiting until later and doing 8th-10th Grade Option, absolutely do the Talent Search. Since Duke TIP subsidizes the cost of the test, the Talent Search ($80 flat rate) is more cost-effective than 8th-10th Grade Option ($35 fee + $47.50 for the SAT or $50.50 for the ACT). If you don't do well on the SAT or ACT when you take it through the Talent Search, you can always retest later. When you've started the 7th Grade Talent Search process, donââ¬â¢t forget to study for the SAT/ACT. Why? Because while Duke TIP is just using the SAT or ACT as a diagnostic, if you blow it off, it could prevent you from getting into a summer studies program that you totally deserve to attend (or at the very least cause you to have to retake the test in order to qualify). At the very minimum, you need to be familiar with the test structure and timing. How can you do this? Take a practice test to gauge where you are, then use this information to determine the amount you have to improve. Know how much time you have to study so you can plan your prep accordingly. A survey carried out in there years to determine the effects of computers in the corporate world revealed that it has taken mangers another burden to devise ways of surveillance and tracking computers and network usage to ensure that employees do not visit unnecessary sites during production hours. Though computers have been acquired by firms to enhance productivity and make work easier and faster, employees have turned them to tools of lazing around. This is one of the challenges of technology in the corporate world. Education is another area that has experienced many challenges as a result of technological developments. Though the use of information systems eliminates the geographical and communication barriers, this has been at a high cost in the education sector. Students and young minds cannot differentiate between the real and virtue realities as a result of the technological gadgets. The result has been that the student fraternity has been confused in emulating virtual superstars whom they are in most cases obsessed with, in the expense of their studies (Hutchby and Ellis, 14). Movies that have become a daily encounter in the lives of children have resulted to a loss of generation that cannot differentiate reality with the virtual content that are shown in movies.
